Flight Simulators seem to be a controversial subject when comes to its applicability to real world training.  Some feel that its useless as a training tool and some even feel that its dangerous to put any stock in it.  Flight Learnings feel very differently, especially for newer students.  We feel that training muscle memory, getting accustomed to the controls, and the location and appearance of the gauges, etc, will go a long way in saving you time and money and increasing safety.  While its not a substitute for the real thing, it is a great tool to help you prepare.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X for Pilots Real World Training is written by Jeff Van West and Kevin Lane-Cummings, two certified flight instructors.  The book takes you through the Sport Pilot Rating, Private Pilot Rating, the Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Rating, and finally the Air Transport Pilot Rating.

The authors do a very good job pointing out where Microsoft Flight Simulator and the real world differ, such as with things like air traffic control communication and operating the Garmin G-1000.

There is also a companion website at wiley.com with free mission files and charts.
